Basic Security Training

The basic Security Course (BST) is designed to meet the needs of persons interested in entering the exciting and growing field of security. It will provide them with the theory and the understanding of applicable laws and regulations necessary to write the competency examination issued by the Justice Institute of BC (JIBC) and for their career in the security industry.

This training prepares the participant by providing the necessary theories of Professional Conduct, Law and the applicable Regulations, Note Taking, Report Writing, Use of Force, Tactical Communication and more. The course prepares them to write the Government of British Columbia Security Service examination issues by the Justice Institute of BC and for the security industry.

Credit: Non Credit. Province of B C Licensing Requirement.

Location: Northern B C Guard Academy, 1919 17th Ave., Prince George, BC

Time: 08:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. with 45 min. /hour lunch breaks non-scheduled energy breaks each day.

Course Pre-requisites: Students must have a minimum of grade 10 reading and comprehension abilities and a solid grasp of the English Language.

Design: Five, eight hour days (or 2x Fri., Sat.,& Sun.)

Hours: 40 hrs. plus 2 hour examination time.

Duration of Certification: Successfully completed once.

Delivery: Lectures, group activities, role play, reading from a book and completing written exercises.

Course Content: Introduction to Security, Applying your Legal Rights and Responsibilities, Note Taking, Report Writing, Patrol Procedures and Personal Safety (Tactical Communication).

Required Text: Basic Security Training Manual. This will be provided as pre-reading or on the first day of the course.

Evaluation: Evaluation of learning for this course will be on the sixth day of the course when a Justice Institute of BC administered test will be administered. The written test consists of one hundred questions on information covered in the “pick the correct answer” format. Students must attain a mark of 70% or better to pass the test and meet the Province of British Columbia’s minimum standard for licensing.

Important Note: Security candidates must be aware that this is an intense program that requires extensive reading and commitment to their overall success. Instructor support is provided throughout the duration of the course. **Participants who successfully write the examination must undergo a security check prior to licensing. The cost of the Security Worker Licence may be researched on our company website of or the BC Ministry of Public Safety website. They must also have one piece of Government Issued photo identification (BCID, Drivers License or Passport) and must provide a passport quality photograph to be affixed to their license. All courses are subject to a minimum size requirement and as such, cancellation can be made with reasonable prior notice.

Success Guaranteed Policy: Participants who act in a professional manner, take part in all physical training, complete all assignments, participate in class may return without charge. There will be a retesting fee due the Justice Inst. of B C.

There will be a cancellation fee if not received within three working days prior to the commencement of the course. Course Pre-requisites: Students must have a minimum of grade 10 reading and comprehension abilities and a solid grasp of the English Language.
